Wisdom Not From God

December 14, 2021

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. (Ja. 3:17-18)

As our society continues its death spiral into the black hole of irrationality, we must take heed concerning the people to whom we listen. We must pay careful attention not just to the words people speak but to the way in which they speak them. James gives us the guidance we need.

Are the ideas being conveyed pure? Are they consistent with the pure Word of God (1 Pet. 2:2). We must be diligent to ensure the content is consistent with God’s Holy Scriptures.

Are they peaceable? The Greek word conveys the idea of loving peace. Is the goal peace? Does the argument being made have peaceful reconciliation as the goal, or anger and divisiveness?

Is it gentle? This word conveys the idea of fairness and mildness. How is the wisdom we are hearing communicated? Gently? Mildly? Or harshly and with bitterness and envy?

Easy to be intreated carries the idea of reasonableness. The ESV translates this, “open to reason.” Are the people we are listening to open to a cordial sit down to have a rational, reasonable, loving and self-controlled conversation? Or are they angry, hostile, and susceptible to outbursts of wrath (Gal. 5:20, NKJV)?

Is there mercy being shown towards those who disagree? Or judgment, condemnation, and reviling?

Is there a partiality being conveyed? Are the messengers convincing us to treat some people one way and other people differently? Are people groups being set against people groups in attempt to create opposition and war? Or, are they conveying that we treat all people with the same honour and respect (Rom. 13:7-8), and encouraging a love of both friend and enemy (Matt. 5:43-48)?

God’s Word through James is clear. If the oracles we are listening to are being conveyed in ways that are not pure, peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruit, and impartial, then the wisdom being conveyed is not from God. It is that simple. The wisdom of God, “is sown in peace of them that make peace.”
