Resurrection Power

June 14, 2018

“And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, which he wrought in Christ when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,” (Eph. 1:19-20, KJV).

A couple of days ago we spoke about the fruit of the Spirit empowering us to live a life that is pleasing to God. We saw that in our flesh we cannot fulfill the law of God. What we need is God to send us His Spirit to change us and grant us the ability to live in a way that is pleasing to God. Here, we see a bit more about this incredible power of God that is at work in us.

Paul tells us that the same power to which we have access, is that which not only rose Christ from the dead, but lifted Him up to heaven where He now sits as King. We should spend time thinking about that. What kind of power is required to bring a person back from the dead? To take a cold, lifeless body and cause it to not only walk this earth again, but to then carry up that body into heaven? Is this not impossible for man? Praise God that what is impossible for man is possible for God (Mt. 19:26). This is nothing but a demonstration of the omnipotence of our mighty God, who created everything.

Now, Paul tells us that this same mighty power is at work in us! The passage is actually a continuation of Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians that God would grant them the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him, that the eyes of their understanding would be opened, so that they could know the riches of His glory, (Eph. 1:17-18). We need the power of God in order to be wise, to know Him, and to truly appreciate the riches of His glory. In chapter 2, we learn that just as Christ was raised from the dead, God raised us up from our spiritual death by granting us salvation in His Son. All of this is tied to the power of God revealed in the resurrection of Christ.

May God help us to truly understand what spiritual power we have in Christ. Yes, you can change! Yes, you can have victory over your sinful desires! Yes, you can understand the Scriptures! Yes, you can be passionate to learn about God and to spend time reading and studying, although it is difficult! Yes, you can have the boldness to share Christ with your family and coworkers! You can have these things because what is impossible for man is possible for God. You can do these things because the same power that rose Christ from the dead, and seated Him in heaven, is at work in you! Can God raise Christ from the dead, but not deal with your laziness, fear, or indifference to the Word of God? God forbid that we should think this way. God is able to change us and to cause us to live victorious Christian lives.

May we pray that the power of God in the resurrection of Christ would be evident in our lives.
