Honor the Son

March 29, 2018

“That all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him,” (John 5:23, ESV).

New and old Christian cults alike deny the full divinity of Christ. Jehovah’s Witnesses say that Christ is the Son of God, but that means that He is not God. Recently, a new “church” leader that is becoming more and more influential said the same thing. What do the Scriptures say?

The text of John 5 begins with Jesus healing someone on the Sabbath day. This angers the Jewish leaders who then seek to persecute Christ. Christ says to them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working,” (Jn. 5:17b). Then we read, “This is why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God,” (Jn. 5:18). The Jews knew that to be the Son of God, meant that one was equal with God, or in other words, was fully divine. That means the phrase, “Son of God,” itself implies Christ’s full divinity.

Immediately following this however, Christ expounds on this truth. He says, “For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise,” (5:19). Christ is claiming to be able to do all of the things the Father does. Christ has the same power that the Father does. Here, Christ is claiming omnipotence. He has the power to do anything. Next, Christ says, “For the Father loves to Son and shows him all that he himself is doing,” (5:20). What would one have to know in order to know all of the things the Father is doing? He would have to know everything. This means Christ is also teaching us about His omniscience in this text. Christ is revealing that He has all of the attributes of God.

Then we read, “For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,” (5:22). Christ is the judge who will judge all things. Lastly, Christ says, “that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father,” (5:23). Can a Jehovah’s Witness, or this new cult leader, obey this scripture? We must honor the Son the exact same way we honor the Father. If we honor the Father as God, then we must honor the Son the same way. If the Father is God, but the Son is not, then this verse is teaching people to commit idolatry. The only way this cannot be idolatry is if the Son is fully God! Anyone who does not honor the Son in this fashion, does not actually honor the Father (5:23b).

Of course, John has already taught us this in the first chapter of the Gospel. He said, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” (Jn. 1:1). Also, John the Baptist said that he was the one crying in the wilderness, “Make straight the way of the Lord,” (1:23) which is a quote from Isaiah 40:3, that says to make straight the way for Jehovah! Further, in John 10:30, Christ claims, “I and the Father are one.” The Jews pick up stones to kill him because this claim resulted in Christ, “being a man, make yourself God,” (Jn. 10:33). To be the Son of God is to be equal with the Father; it is to be God!

The full divinity of Christ is all throughout the Scriptures! The Bible is not vague about Christ being fully God! We can thank Him that He so clearly lays out the truth for us in the Bible so that we can know Him better!

Let us not be deceived or intimidated by false doctrine. The Bible is true. May God teach us more about what it says, and help us to make those things known to a lost world!
