Family Matters

October 20, 2017

“But if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to practice piety in regard to their own family and to make some return to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God,” (1Tim. 5:4, NASB).

We have touched on the principle of social responsibility seen here before. Namely, that principle is the focus of the Word of God on the family being the primary responsibility of a person. Before someone can expect to make a difference in the society at large, they must act in a godly and responsible manner toward their own family. In regards to a widow, the women’s children or grandchildren have the duty to take care of her. Only if a widow is all alone, is the entire community to be involved in taking care of her needs.

We see this emphasis again in 1 Timothy. In chapter 3, Paul lists the qualifications of an elder. He says that an overseer must be someone who, “manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?), (1 Tim. 3:4-5). Before a man could expect to benefit God’s people at large, he must first be a benefit to his own family. A man could not serve in the public ministry if he was a poor family man. Again we see that, biblically, before someone can be effective in the society at large, they first must take care of, honor, and show piety to their own family.

Often this principle can be forgotten, and not just in the church. Scientology has a form of teaching that regards the work of eternity as being of the ultimate importance. Scientologists believe that their work will benefit all of mankind forever. Because of this, they can see their own family relationships as not important. How can one relationship with a spouse or a child be of the same value as working to save humanity? In addition, they believe in a form of reincarnation. Therefore, how can relationships of this one life matter that much? As a result of these beliefs, families can often dissolve for those who follow this religion. Story after story of families being destroyed have been brought to the light. And some people think that doctrine doesn’t matter.

This is not to be the case in the Christian church. Although the work that we do in serving the true and living God ought to have an eternal focus, the Bible teaches that we will not make an impact in the world, if we do not know how to make an impact in our own families. Before one can expect to change society, they must be able to change their family. If we spend all of our time preaching the Gospel, and none of our time acting in a godly and responsible way to our families, God will not be pleased. In regards to the ministry, we will have disqualified ourselves. This is a principle of vital importance. Do you want to positively influence society? Start in your own home.

May God work in us to show all piety and godliness to our families. May we not think that the work we do in the society at large is more important than the work we do among our own family. May God give us the ability to honor him within the confines of our own home.
